Trivia: I was watching a show this Sunday by K.Bhagyaraj. He said that the scene of Janakaraj's son in Aan Paavam getting his head stuck in a pot was a real life incident, which he casually said to his assistants and which was eventually used by Pandiyarajan in this movie.

NANDU - MAIN LOVE THEME

Nandu was made by Mahendran, of the legendary "Udhiripookal" fame. His movies are very simple and unflashy without big stars and his strengths are essentially a strong characterization of the leading protagonist of the movie. Mahendran's trademark is essentially the ability to re-create quite successfully, stories that have already been written in novel format, something that we have recently seen in "Azhagarsamiyin Kudhirai", which not many have been able to replicate successfully on screen. For a person with such ability, i find it strange to find that the number of movies made by him are very less. The only guess that i could give is that his movies were probably less successful, commercially.

This is the main love theme that occurs between the hero and the heroiene. There is another parallel love track, where another girl ( who is also one of the residents of the house) loves the hero one-sidedly.

Inspite of Suhasini's (Sister Nandini) sacrifices for her family, including compromises in her married life, her siblings don't seem to appreciate them. One of her three brothers has stopped supporting the family after his marriage while another has committed suicide. Without asking Suhasini's permission, her father rents the house to a working man with whom her sister eventually elopes, causing her and the family further trauma.

This is just a one-off scene which describes the events taking place in Suhasini's house, without her knowledge.

A cult classic comedy movie. One of the best Sathyaraj - Goundamani combo movies. Introduction scene of Goundamani in the movie. This theme is more goundamani specific. Unlike the main comedy theme, this one is used only a couple more times in the movie, when the focus of the scene is on goundamani alone, especially, when he is trying to escape from somebody.

P.S: I wonder where has this P.Vasu gone? Rather than doing remakes of someone else's stories, as he does these days, i still think its better if he atleast makes an attempt to do movies like this.

NAANEY RAJA NAANEY MANTHIRI - COMEDY THEME

Okay, now think about Vijayakanth - what do you think? Acsen, Deeveravadhi, Bakistan, Dumeel Dumeel , Sendiment, Arasiyal.. What about Gomedy? Dont think it matches, right?
[ Avar recenta panra action movies turn out to be Gomedies, adhu vera vishayam.]

But, this was one comedy movie, with absolutely no logic. Honestly, a full length Vijayakanth comedy movie. Ilayaraja has scored a simbly soober classical bgm piece, which just reflects how stupid, illogical, yet how funny the scenes are, in this movie.

I think most people who have seen this movie , would remember the job recruitment scene. [ B.A naa rendu eluthu, appo kammiya padichirukaan.] Its like a Bhagyaraj comedy scene, where most of the humour comes from expression and timing. For those who haven't watched this, do get your hands on it. It is a must watch.

Screenplay is by R.SundarRajan. I could not track the director's name. If someone knows it, please let me know.

GAYATRI - A STRANGE WEDDING NIGHT

Gayatri is newly married to Rajarathnam. She looks forward to a happy married life. She enters the wedding night room, but something's not right here. She doesnt realize it herself at this point, but observe the BGM. Unlike a conventional score, The BGM here incorporates suspicion mixed with a thriller feel ( right from 0.01 as she enters the room) , also including the shyness of the bride, the charming and stylish hero/villain rajinikanth and the romance off course (especially from 0.42 , when the flute gives us a soothing feel).

EN BOMMUKUTTY AMMAVUKKU - THE FATHER RETURNS DISAPPOINTED

This clip is going to be sheer joy for your ears, i promise you. The BGM changes drastically in tune with the changing human emotions and visuals in the scene. Fazil has etched a very nice scene with The confused father (priest), the insecure Lakshmi and the happy-innocent Teenu.

Suhasini(Lakshmi) has accepted Teenu now as her daughter and she is very attached to her now. At the beginning, it looks like the father has paid her a normal visit ( we come to know only later, that he wants to take Teenu back, as her biological mother Mercy(Rekha) is mentally retarded and Teenu could be the only way to save her. Having encouraged Vinod and Lakshmi to adopt Teenu , he does not have the heart to tell them, he wants Teenu back. )

First there is a happy teenu showing the father around, her proud photos. Observe the silence. The first instance of BGM can be seen in the single string stroke when she proudly shows the bommukutty amma picture. Now, the father slowly tries to influence Teenu to come to the orphanage by reminding her of her friends. Hearing this , Lakshmi feels insecure [ the camera focuses on her], and there is a sorrowful tune, now played. ( She probably had an inner instinctive feeling that the father now wants to permanently seperate Teenu too from her.)

Suhasini now tries to get Teenu ready to school. She wants to divert Teenu's thoughts and doesnt want the father to influence her. The father looks around and sees the expensive toys that Teenu has. He is torn with pain - it was he who had given Teenu this life, and now he is probably taking it back from her. ( It is still in his mind, the viewer does not know it yet. You have to analyze this only by his expressions and the bgm )

Knowing the desperate situation that Mercy is in now, the father makes another attempt at convincing her to come and see her friends, once. [SILENCE AS HE TALKS].

The camera focusses on Suhasini and she gets increasingly worried. (Again observe the bgm change).

Now Teenu shows the father her trunk proudly. She shows the father a bunch of things ( which she had originally asked Vinod and Lakshmi, when they first came to see her in the orphanage - red balloon, bommu kutty amma photo, butterfly pic.. etc) - We find a harmonic ringing of bells, but when she innocently shows the old gown, something pierces the father's heart. Observe the BGM change.. Amazing, isnt it?

And then , the confusion in the father's mind..

Twinkle.. Twinkle.. little star...

Suhasini confronts him.. Observe the scene when the father has a lump in her throat. Her justifications seem normal (mild bgm) , until she tells him not to come again.. This is a polite shock.. The tempo soars and it gets mingled with the sea waves, as the father walks , never to come back .

Its been four years since Sindhu died, and the family is yet to overcome the shock. The father encourages Vinod to bring Lakshmi to the ashram. But Suhasini emotionally breaks down in the ashram when she sees the bommukutty amma and leaving behind an embrassed and irritated Vinod. A feud subsequently begins at home.

This is a very painful scene, showing the emptiness in the lives of the couple. At two places in this sorrowful scene, Raja uses the double bass in the scene to play the starting portion of the bgm theme ( this same instrument is used when the couple realize that sindhu has fallen in the water)

The flute and the violin that follow the slap are reflective of not only the emptiness in the house, but also in their hearts, which act as prelude to the song - "Uyire uyirin Oliye"..

Today, We shall continue with the second part of the " En Bommu Kutty Ammavukku" BGM series. I had mentioned that the previous month was the Murali tribute month. However, beyond Poomani, it was not possible to post clips of other movies. However, as i have mentioned , the tribute series will continue, but it might just take a bit more of time.

EN BOMMUKUTTY AMMAVUKKU - WHEN THE FATHER(PRIEST) BECAME A CHILD

This is a fun scene. The father comes out and challenges the children to a duel. The claps ( lack of instrumental music) used at the right place in the scene actually enhances the value of the music that follows it.

Once the father calls the children and tells them that he wants to play with them, there are claps all around.

The first boy plays. The music starts. He loses. No music/only claps.

Second boy plays. The music starts again. He loses. No music/claps again.

Now.. here's the change..

The third boy probably is a champion. So, before beginning the pattern, we hear two whistles - just as the father turns around and sees his opponent, this is probably to tell the father to get ready. This is even more justifiable by the visual scene, where the father ties his coat like a lungi, as if he is accepting the challenge.

The scene ends humourously with the priest saying : " Kashtam.. unnala oru apple nashtam."

It is one thing for Raja to score bgm for sorrowful scenes, but observe the scale of the tragedy with that of the choice of the instruments for the pathos bgm ( the leit motif score as mentioned earlier, is used here, as well ).

EN BOMMUKUTTY AMMAVUKKU - SERIES - PART 1

As mentioned earlier, the Murali tribute series will continue. The next movie on the pipeline is "Adharmam" starring Murali, Nasser and Ranjitha. The clips shall be uploaded in the next few days. To compensate for it, I am going to treat you guys.

Ilayaraja has scored music for a thousand films and written bgm for lakhs of minutes and if i personally had to close my eyes and reflect and chose one bgm amongst all those i knew ( including the famous punnagai mannans, nayagans and mouna raagams) , it is very likely that 8 out of 10 times, i'd find this piece - the leitmotif BGM theme for this movie. I am not internally comparing his own pieces of work, nor am i technically competent to assess what is so special about this piece, but it is a very feel good score. The piece is used at many places through out the movie, but it is so so good, that it literally feels to me, as if the movie screenplay was written for this bgm tune.

"En bommu kutty ammavukku", like other Fazil movies, are dramas that play on our emotional quotients. It is the story of a couple who have lost their daughter, and suddenly, their lives for four years have gone void. Teenu ( Bommu Kutty Amma) then enters their lives and fills the role of their lost daughter, albeit temporarily, leaving them with a much bigger wound and permanent emptiness.

I am uploading the first part of the series of bgms of this very special movie. If you have not watched it, do watch it, it isn't funny, it isn't action filled nor is it an all time classic, it is a simple movie that touches a special string in your heart.

P.S : Incidentally, this movie was produced by Isaignani Ilayaraja himself :).

AAN PAAVAM - CLASSIC

A nice BGM piece from Aanpavam. Seetha has just come back from the river, where she has met pandiyan and who has given his watch as a gift to her. She returns home and the fun begins....

The scene has two dimensions at this point. Her affection for pandiyan ( whom she liked , but later, comes to know that he was not the real maapilai) is reflected in her feelings for the watch, and the second dimension where she has to stealthily save the drowning watch , without the knowledge of her parents.

Initially the camera and bgm focus is only on her, where she stands and thinks without knowing how to save the watch, until her mother assigns a task to her. The director conveys to us that some masala is now being added to the scene. Observe the BGM transition here. Now we have a third dimension to the scene - what would happen to the old man? Seetha mixes the masala in dreamland while the old man is blissfully unaware of the trouble about to befall him.

She then takes the water to the bathroom and filters out the watch. At this point, Raja uses the love theme ( which we have seen earlier). The piece ends when Seetha comes out of the bathroom, and as the old man enters it, the music which was used when the masala was mixed is used again.

A master piece indeed ...

Climax BGM - 1

Shalini (Mini is her character name) introduces Vijay (Jeeva is his character name) and his parents to her mother. Vijay asks excuse to Shalini's mother for the mistake he did. Inturn Shalini's mother thank Vijay for giving back her daughter purely. She also says that she will give the first invite of Shalini's marriage only to his parents. Shalini is still inside her room. Raaja's music will be in background along with dialogue

Climax BGM - 2

Now all are seated and Shalini brings juice for everyone. From 00:00 to 00:50 she gives juice to her family members, vijay's parents and friends. Now she comes near Vijay with the juice. 00:50 to 1:20. How better can a music director depict their feelings more than this? Awesome! 1:20 to 1:36. Sridevi is mouth- struck looking at the beauty and simplicity of Shalini. Tears are about to fall in both Sridevi's eyes and audience's eyes. [ THE BGM ENDS HERE]

They return the chain and start leaving Shalini's house. Shalini's mother interrupts Sridevi and asks her, why she leaves even without speaking a word to her daughter. She requests Sridevi to bless Shalini since she is going to get married...

Here comes the turning point.. Sridevi couldn't control herself. She replies to Shalini's mother " What shall i bless her? She is my daughter-in-law. Give her to me. ".. Silence and shock everywhere (in the theatres too). Oh my god! Some fight is going to take place. Shalini's brothers are going to do something. What will that mother say?? Lot of question in audience mind.. Shalini's mother will reply " Take her. Who stopped you? Take ur daughter-in-law " A never expected reply. While the brothers stare she tells them that she wants her daughter to be happy. Thats all.

Climax BGM-3

Now the master-piece of maestro. 00:00 to 00:12. Shalini cries and hugs her mother out of happiness. Tears in everyone's eyes. 00:13 to 00:30.. Now Sridevi asks sorry to his son for toiling him so far by opposing their love. Vijay couldn't speak anything and hugs his mother. 00:30 to 00:38. Sridevi confesses to Sivakumar that she can not find a girl better than Shalini. Smiles and tears all over. All are happy.

See how beautifully he has fused Violin, flute and guitar? You ppl would have noticed that i didn't mention much about Raaja's music in each BGM. My english is not that good to appreciate his work in this BGMs. Even a great english poet, could decribe only 10% of what he feels by hearing IR's music. Then where am i?

So hear these BGMs and feel the beauty. No words r there to appreciate his works.

Climax 2 and 3 are my picks.

Climax 2 starts with a beautiful piece in Major Scale(Sankarabharanam), there is a pause and then we hear the theme music in Minor Scale.It is Major Scale again towards the end.It is so smooth and seamless that one cannot help not wondering at the dexterity of the Master.

Kaapi is in full flow in Climax 3 intoxicating us..

By the way, as Cambodia Karthik says, it was Srividhya and not Sridevi.

MAHARASAN - RENDULA ONNU?

An interesting scene this is. VK Ramaswamy has a secret in his heart which he cannot share to anyone. On one occasion, his wife , the driver (Koundamani) and with him travelling in a car, his wife reveals a shocking secret that makes the driver lose control and they meet with an accident. His wife is now bedridden and now only the driver and he know the secret. ( Obviously now, the driver takes advantage and blackmails VKR, whenever he needs to.)

Unable to discuss it with anyone else, he is heartbroken as he sees more chaos happening in the lives of his children(?). It finally reaches a boiling point in this scene, where he cant take it anymore. Raja's music gives the initial buildup, before the truth explodes. The music is very reflective of the shock that occurs to the two groups of people present in the room. ( Also observe Koundamani's reaction once VKR lets the truth out.)

POOMANI - MARUDHANI FOR THE DEVIL

After a barrage of abuses hurled at her poor husband, Devayani finally falls in love with her husband , after pottu sacrifices her life, and commits suicide. But unfortunately for her, this co-incides with the return of her original fiance - now her brother in law. With Devayani wanting to win the love of her husband back ( which went away after pottu committed suicide, when Devayani suspected the relationship between them), Prakashraj wants something sinister. He is now a villain who lusts for his brother's wife.

The scene starts off with a happy Devayani applying marudhani on her husband (assuming). Raja's happy music also makes us believe the same, until that eerie sound, revealing the wolf behind the blanket. However, a naive Devayani continues to apply marudhani thinking its her husband - Raja continues the original happy music, until Prakashraj calls out to her. Devayani now backtracks and runs away as Raja plays out the eerie music again.

POOMANI - WEDDING NIGHT

Unfortunately Murali's plans go up in smoke when Prakashraj runs away from the wedding. Left with no option, Murali has to marry the girl whom he visualized as his anni.( and also betray his athai ponnu - pottu). Understandingly, Devayani fumes as if she has been betrayed by the entire human male race. Unlike the normal mood of a tamil first night with a happy and vetkams filled heroiene, devayani is filled with hate, pain and sorrow and she throws all she has at her husband. A helpless Murali accepts it all, for the sake of his old father.

The scene starts with the end notes of the pathos bgm. ( may have been a result of poor cutting by me :( ). As Devayani fumes, Raja uses one of his favorite bgm tools - silence :). He entirely lifts the mood of the scene as Devayani removes the thaali of her neck and throws it at him. He then plays out the pathos theme again. An emotional Murali then crumbles down and pleads to her, as Raja steals our hearts with his divine music.

POOMANI - DEVAYANI'S MELANCHOLY

Unfortunately Murali(Poomani)'s over enthusiasm turns into an unwarranted situation. He creates a messy situation in her village, which leaves Devayani's life in the balance. (Typical of Village Panchayat scenes). Vinu Chakravarthy proposes that his elder son Prakashraj gets married to Devayani, which the proud( or ego filled) father comes home to convey to his wife and daughter.

The pathos BGM reflects the sorrowful mood of the heroiene, who has no real say in an important decision in her own life.

Like many lucky actors from his generation, Murali had the advantage of strong music in his films, composed by Ilayaraja. Being the son of a famous director in Karnataka, Murali was a fine actor and more importantly was a nice human being. I was browsing through rajarasigan's blog, when i found this amazing BGM clip. An entire Panchayathu scene of 5 minutes with almost just visuals and Background score. Parimala - the sly girl ( i just hate her character in this movie), has accused the village teacher of having an affair with her.

This clip can be viewed as three parts. The initial part is the one filled with chaos. The villagers swarm on Bhagyaraj accusing him and tear him apart. The guilt filled Parimala looks down on the ground, watching her mother fall on Bhagyaraj's feet begging him to accept her daughter. Bhagyaraj also sees his mother in law and sister law [ of his first dead wife], and is literally helpless. Starting with a typical folk beat with the thapattai and kottu melam, it soon transforms into a slow violin piece, as the scenes of chaos come to an end.

Silence.......

Dialogue.....

The second part is the instant shock, when Bhagyaraj asks Urvasi to do something that no one would dare to. A few seconds of BGM reflect that thought.

The third part is the ultimate one, in this entire piece. The prelude to this piece, itself gives us a feel of what is to come. When Bhagyraj literally knows what is coming, he is brutally shocked. Urvasi looks at him one last time, and does the unthinkable. What follows is pure ecstasy. [2:50 to 3:10]. The music oscillates between the inhumane act(in this case) to get married as pursued by Urvasi, and the apprehensive fear that something would befall the innocent child.

Once, the waves have subsided , the marriage getti melam follows.

MOUNA RAAGAM - PAY BACK TIME

Mouna Raagam is a movie based on 2 strong well defined characters - Mohan and Revathi and a little cameo by Karthik. On this basis, Raja has scored three leit motif scores for each of the three people, that is a reflection of their basic character and which should suit all kinds of scenes in which they appear. Karthik has a peppy tune to reflect the cool dude in him, while Revathy's is a reflection of a strong minded woman.

Mohan's score is a bit different. It is more of a classical based tune. Though it appears as a tragic mourning tune ( a slow pathos kind of tune), it suits him very well, even in normal moods. [ Mohan's character is that of a very understanding husband, who still loves his wife, inspite of her initially detesting him. So, even in a normal situation for Mohan, there is some pain in his heart all through the movie. It is possible that Raja took this into consideration, while composing that piece for him.]

Apart from this , there are some situational BGM scores as always, like the peppy tune, when Mohan takes Revathi around Delhi, or the scene when Revathi with the help of the kids, clean up the house or the one in which Raja replicates a chilling heartbeat, when Revathi's father initially meets with a heart attack. Mouna Raagam in short, as is well known, is nothing short of a BGM treat through out the movie - A movie which surely stands out in Tamil cinema, as one of the best movies ever made, truly well ahead of its time.

At the point of this scene, Mohan has just recovered from an accident and Revathy's attitude towards him is slowly getting transformed. Though, she hasn't admitted, she is falling in love with him, and is ready to take on the duties of a sincere wife. It is unclear in this scene, if Mohan really means what he says - Is he paying her back for what she said before? Or does he want her to totally detest him, as he knows, that she is going to go back to Chennai, once the formal divorce comes through? A literally shattered Revathy goes back to her room, along those very same stairs, where she had said those words, once. Kudos to Raja - The Revathy leit motif tune played with violins. The normally effervescent naughty Geetha who plays pranks and teases everyone meets her match, with this stranger. Gayathri was a crime thriller made in the early 70s. It is based on the harassment meted out to an innocent teen girl, newly married , by a group of rogues. The suspense is retained until the end with the help of a strong screenplay. The movie deals with only a hand ful of characters , with a strong characterization for each of them. The story was written by Sujatha for a tamil magazine.

The treatment of Gayathri is different in the sense, that this does not deal with a single sex maniac, but a group of people, and this is kept as a suspense, till almost the very end of the movie. The movie has some objectable scenes, but it might be acceptable considering the nature of the script. This should be certainly one of Rajini's best anti hero roles, and Sridevi as an innocent girl, also emotes with ease.

Newly Married, Gayatri finds strange things happening in her house. For each of these incidents, she finds her husband's justifications acceptable, but at one point, she realizes that some thing is wrong. One fine night, she wakes up to find her husband missing from their bed, which sow the seeds of suspicion, firmly in her.

Gayathri may have got up, and just casually moved towards the door, to find out what her husband was up to. As she walks, Raja keeps the BGM at a constant tempo, but on finding the door locked, she is bound to get really much more suspicious. At this point, Raja breaks away and strikes a gong, which sync's with her shock expressions.

– this is the kidnapping of shoba. This starts with the strong psychopath leitmotif piece for chandru. However, it is used for only a short duration of time in this clip. It seems like a combination of chorus and the double bass to me. Through out the movie, there are various instances where a bubblish sound is played, am unaware of what is the instrument, none the less, it complements the main leit motif score so well. Shoba is kidnapped by prathap and taken to ooty.

– this is a sentimental scene. Prathap has just murdered a prostitute, before he comes out and realizes his mistake on seeing the dead prostitute’s daughter. Raja plays the small bit song to reflect the special bonding that prathap has shared with his mother. The song has only about 2 or 3 lines of lyrics, before it ends on an extended soft flute, humming the song’s base tune.

– the boy has seen the murderer again, and even prathap has realized it. The chase scene is given a thriller effect by the background music and raja slowly rises the tempo of the music as the scene moves on. Starting with some basic beats, he increases the tempo gradually. Compared to the previous scene, we can clearly see a western touch here, mostly generated from electronic instruments. The hero is seen running like almost he’s running away from a ghost, so the situation is one that is very similar to the thriller or a horror movie. There is a slow transformation towards the end of the scene in the bgm as well, when prathap hides behind the tree, before it silences out.

Mohan(S.V.Sekar’s voice) and this actress(can be seen in chinna veedu and mundhanai mudichu in small character roles) have no real importance in the main story. However, this shot has been forcefully introduced in the screenplay to give the police some leeway to solve the case. Mohan is a small time still assistant of a film unit and the girl seems to be something like a side actress. They have a relationship going, and mohan tries to click some pictures of her. The bike shots play an important role in the cracking of the ripper’s case for the police.

MOODU PANI - THE SUMMER TREAT BEGINS

In an effort to compensate for not having posted much this year, i will post various clips of the 80s classic thriller - moodu pani. An unbeatable series of back ground scores to make you forget the summer heat from ilayaraja. This will also include the clip requested by anand in the Cbox. Also, i shall try to update some text notes for some of the older clips, which had only the video.

Psycho Killers/murderers are not new to tamil cinema. Most of the stories have almost the same plot - an anti hero who is a victim of child abuse and hence has a total aversion towards females, and hence becomes a rapist or a female murderer. An almost similar story skeleton can be seen in the movies Sigapu Rojakkal, Moodupani, Kadhal Konden or Alavandan. The hero would have a strong bonding with a now dead mother. So, there are 2 sides to the same coin. While the hero detests almost all woman, he tends to see his mother in the heroine and eventually falls in love with her. And in most cases, since the hero is a villain, there would be another lover to the heroiene(dummy piece).

This genre is such that scope for acting is immense and the main protoganists in all the above mentioned movies have earned accolades for their acting. The directors of the above movies are immensely talented people as well. But, i think among all the actors in the movies mentioned above, prathap pothan stands out. Especially, when he innocently proposes to Shobha asking her to marry him in the library is amazing. The little gimmicks in the guest house, when he fixes a bell to open windows, and he demo's Shobha as to get a whiff of air, is right away hilarious. With Balu Mahendra's voice (seems to me like BM's voice, not sure), and his expressions, to me , he takes the award for the best tamil psychopath character, beating everyone by a mile. I dont know if he has got any award for this film, but he surely deserves it. I have seen him doing the role of a joker in the "Goundamani - Prabu" comedy - thedinen vandadhu, but thats just a mockery of such a fine actor.

Amongst the BM movies that i have seen , BM To me has never done justice to his story line. A touch of vulgarity is also present in most of his movies (except comedy ones - Veedu was the only exception, where i saw BM in every frame of the movie. It still remains one of my all time best movies). But his strength lies
in his camera work and his ability to get the best acting performances in his characters. "Moondram pirai" Kamal and "Moodu pani" prathap are very good examples.

Music has always been an essential platform for all these movies. This genre gives more freedom for music directors to express themselves , and it is a genre most music directors would be comfortable with, rather than an entirely classical based genre where only genuises like Raja (Sindhu Bhairavi, Unnal Mudiyum Thambi) or Rahman (Sangamam) have achieved tellable success. Balu Mahendra once quoted that he would leave cinema, the day ilayaraja left it. He dint say it without a reason. I leave the video posts for the users themselves to comprehend the impact ilayaraja gives to a movie, once you people see the clips, yourselves.

BLOG UPDATES - MAY 2010

1. Sorry folks, 2010 has been a lot busier than 2009 for me, so the posts have gone down badly. Also, i have been stuck up with lots of logistical issues. My computer broke down and i had to shift my place. These issues took quite some time, and also my professional front has also kept me quite busy. I apologize for the lack of updates, i do hope to reduce this summer heat , by giving you some cool IR bgm's.
2. BGMs of nooravadhu naal and moodupani shall be updated today.
3. The page creator issue as mentioned earlier, has still not yet been fixed. The future of the blog is still in jeopardy. I guess the minimal option that we could still have, is go back to the old .mp3 days. Host the .mp3 files on another free server and give you the links. I know that it is never as good , as watching streaming video, as we have now, but i seriously, have no idea about this mess and when and how i intend to fix this.
4. Most of the older posts were initially uploaded on the rapidshare free server. The rapidshare server deletes a file from the server, taht has not been downloaded for 90 days. So, logically, most of the older .mp3 files are not there in the server now. When i find the time, i shall patch up the missing files and update the links, however, i dont know by what time, this process will be completed. The Nooravadhu Naal bgm was a classic example of this case. The file is now lost. As per Ramesh's request, i have reuploaded the file and updated the new link. People who need a specific file from the older posts, can inform me using the Cbox, i shall update that specific file.

1. MP3 Files of Older Posts: I just found that some of the old mp3 links were not working. I dont seem to find most of the files in the rapidshare server. I am not sure, if they have been deleted because they have not been downloaded for over 90 days, or that if each file can only be stored for only a definite period of time in a free rapidshare account. Since, i do not have most of the source videos for all files, i can try to only provide specific files, on request.

2. A matter of grave concern - Till date, blogger (blogspot) was hosted on google page creator. Now, google page creator is now migrating to google sites. Google sites do not support files of size greater than 1 mb. Most video files in our blog surely have size greater than 1 MB. I am seriously in a dilemma. :( I am yet to discuss this issue in detail with my co-blogger Raj, however, we shall try to look for alternate free blog domains. Hosting videos on an individual blog domain shall require monetary assistance(which tends to go against the very principal of running of our blog) and it is also illegal.

This instance has happened in rakamma.com, where the IR bgm files loaded in that server, were told to be removed. I do not want such a situation to occur. As fans of ilayaraja, we request you to pour in your suggestions to address this crisis and as always, we want this blog to up and running. Keladi Kanmani was Vasanth's first movie as director. K.Balachander was his mentor and his influence can easily be seen in this movie. The style of screenplay , the dialogues and mainly the story is centered around a woman, which is quite common in a K.B film. The story revolves around the life of Anu - her happiness, sorrows, love and feelings of insecurity towards her near and dear ones, complete the story. Since, Anu is the pivotal character of the movie, Raja has composed a leit motif for her character's individuality and the impact is tremendrous. I cant think of any other music composer who has such a strong presence in composing leitmotif's for any movie. Raja is truly the genius of BGM.

Most of the scenes associated with Anu in the movie are either of pain, disappointment or those of sarcastic happiness. This is one of the scenes, where the Anu leit motif is put to good use.

The scene starts off with typically negative thoughts of Anu. The moment she says - "Namma Kadhal neraveradhu" - the slow BGM comes from a piano reflecting Anu's thoughts and they stop, the moment, Ramesh Aravind decides to be optimistic. Raja then allows space for the hero to put his love to the test, just allowing the sound of the waves , behind them. I think the building of the sand house is played by a saxophone. Each time the waves come forward, Raja plays the gong to create the feeling of suspense, as we do not know , as to what would happen to the house?

It is then a disappointing end to the scene, where the sand castle is destroyed by the horse and the feelings of pain are then reflected by the gentle leit motif score of Anu.

IDHAYATHAI THIRUDATHEY - LOVE IN HIS EYES

Idhayathai Thirudathey was one of Manirathnam's most romantic movies. Hiding behind their worries, the hero and heroiene tease each other in the first half of the movie. The second half is dominated by love based - emotional scenes. This is one of the movies, where the impact of the BGM is proportionately very high, as in all movies that Raja has worked with Manirathnam. Raja scores two seperate leitmotif 's in this movie - one for the playful teasing of the hero with the heroiene and the next one is the slow love theme humming piece, which is also a part of this clip.

The scene starts with an angry heroine coming storming into the heroes house. The initial feeling that we get, is that - this is going to be an extension of the previous scene, where the hero would snub her again. The first part of the BGM tends to give us the same feeling as well. The moment, the hero looks in her eyes and proposes - it tends to give the heroiene - a shock. She has realized that he really means it this time, but is unable to respond. Raja's silence in the BGM co-incide with the shocking expressions on her face, a sheer example of his genius.

Once the hero says it, the third time , the truth dawns on her and Raja's chorus starts from there. The heroiene leaves the place out of shyness, but his words are all over the place, where ever she goes. The soft continued - "I LOVE YOU" humming by the chorus gives us a reflection of the hero's words continuously echoing in her ears , not even allowing her to sleep, before , she can take it no longer. The music played in this part of the clip is also used as a love leitmotif at other parts in the movie.

The moment she meets him again, it is evident that the chorus reminders are no longer needed. We are taken into a sea of romantic music, which only grows deeper and deeper. The strings, followed by the violin and the single flute fill up the space in time, before she can hear those magical words , once again from her beloved.

CHINNA VEEDU - THE PLAYBOY

The ultimate playboy BGM theme in Tamil Cinema. Its impact can be seen even in 2010 - in two incidences of prominence. One of the characters in the movie "Goa" is a playboy and is leitmotif is the same as the "playboy" BGM theme in this movie. I do not wish to name the second instance here, but it is concerned with the hottest and most debatable topic in an around TamilNadu, at the time at which this post is being published.

The humming of this piece has the real impact. I dont know who is humming this piece - it doesn't sound like a male chorus voice to me. Raja has definitely chosen an apt voice and has given an awesome tune to hum. Bhagyaraj's creative mind to put up such a scene would have definitely inspired Raja ( though this theme is used as a playboy leitmotif and we also know about Bhagyaraj's genius, when he pens the screenplay). Not to forget , the tabla music that accompanies the humming.

MANNVASANAI - ROMANCE

Mannvasanai was another of Bharathiraja's gramathu stories. It was based on a real story and the story revolves around the life of Muthupechi and the immense love that she has for her mama. Her mama - pandiyan is a sandiyar in the village and keeps picking the sickle(aruva) at the drop of the hat. For the scenes projecting pandiyan's machoism, raja mainly uses the "kottu-melam" as the background score. For the scenes involving revathy and pandiyan, gentler scores based mostly on "arisi kuthum akka magaley" and "pothi vecha malligai" are used.

Off course, there are incidents when he prefers not to go with the songs and uses sounds from instruments that are very much relevant to that particular scene. There is a scene in which Revathy and her friend slyly try to steal cotton from Pandiyan's field. Pandiyan is lying on top of a hay porch (where scarecrows are kept) and does not initially hear them at first. The BGM there is very reflective of the slyness involved in the girls trying to flick the cotton.

This was the time when Bharathiraja was badly obsessed with Vairamuthu. So, he probably has asked him to pen some short poems based on the female protoganist. These short songs/poems are recited by a teacher (Nizhalgal Ravi) , who does not have much of a relevance to the real story.

SINDHU BHAIRAVI - SINDHU IN LOVE

J.K.B is a famous classical singer. He loves his wife deeply , but is openly critical of the fact that , inspite of being named after the Bhairavi ragam, she has no knowledge in something, that he is deeply passionate about. His encounter with Sindhu changes his life forever. Their mutual liking for each other initiates from the fact that both have strong roots in classical music and have many things to talk about, that interest each other.

One night Sindhu gets an anonymous call and a person kisses her on the phone. She is livid with the person and it gets worse , when JKB makes the confession that it was him, the next day. She decides not to talk with him anymore and avoids contact with him. It is this seperation that makes her feel her love with him.

This is a set of montage shots to demonstrate the onset of love in Sindhu's life. For a girl who begins to realize that she is in love and a fact that she later admits to JKB that she gets the rumbling feelings of butterflies flying in her heart, the flute (the violin in between) playing this love tune could not have described it better. My interpretation of the occasional strings in between the piece is to reflect the fact that Sindhu comes back to reality.

Guna

It is typical of an Indian Film Hero to have a ‘larger than life image’.

The Hero-who is always smart or made to look smart-swoons, gyrates and sings with the Heroine (s),sheds tears for his mother/sister, fights and finally conquers the Villain.One sees different combinations of this (a+b)c formula.

There have been exceptions and 'Guna' is one such film where the Hero is an ugly mentally disturbed character.He is pure at heart and people exploit him to the hilt.He is obsessed with ‘Abhirami’- name of the deity in a place called Tirukkadayur and as per Hindu Mythology, Abhirami Battar, a poet cum worshipper composed 100 hymns called Abhirami Anthathi to make the Moon appear on a Amavasai(New Moon Night!).

Guna considers himself the Lord and is sure that he would marry Abhirami on a Full Moon night.

He sees a beautiful girl in the Temple, imagines that she is his ‘Abhirami’, and abducts her.After some initial hiccups , she understands his good nature and falls in love with him.There are lot of philosophical overtones in the movie and I am not getting into that.

My intention in writing all these is to show how Music can give life and add colour to a complex story(rather a simple story with complex meanings!).The Music in the Film does shine like the Full Moon!

The Leit Motif in the movie is the Ragam called Paavani-the 41st Melakartha.Paavani in Sanskrit means ‘Pure’.It also means the ‘Protector’. Guna is pure and he protects his ‘Abhirami’ Moreover, it is a Vivadhi raga evoking an eerie feeling.

The BGM of Guna proves the fact that it is not just Creativity and Innovation that make a Genius.

There is something more ...

Something very sacred that distinguishes a Genius from ordinary mortals.

I have classified the BGM bits under different headings for better understanding adn appreciation.

1.Abhirami

i.Abhirami at The Temple-He sees her for the first time and decides she is his ‘Abhirami’.We hear the Nagaswaram in Kedaram giving the ambience of a Temple. This changes to a wonderful Hamsanadam played in strings and flute to announce the arrival of the Heroine.The Temple Bell welcomes her.

ii.Paarthavizhi and its Postlude-Hamsanadam seamlessly changes to Paavani.The Sitar reaches a crescendo and the Flute takes over indicating the ‘Divine Love’.

iii.Abhirami Theme 2-She makes an effort to understand him and his background.The ‘Paavani’ piece is played without in anyway intruding into the dialogues.When he says ‘Pournami is drawing closer’, the Music stops, we hear the chiming of the bell twice and Paavani appears again.

Proves yet again as to why he is the Emporer of Music.

iv.She is Ill-This is the sequence where she begins to understand his good nature.A wonderful Western Classical piece follows Paavani to depict her condition. He goes to town to fetch the Doctor and the Music makes our Heart pound.

v.His Abhirami Now- She accepts his love.A simple guitar and Flute finally culminating in the theme music when she emotes. A new dimension to Love. A new dimension to Music.

vi.Marriage-Meeting of East and the West.Both are poles apart in terms of their upbringing, their looks, their status.But is it not a fact that opposites attract?Just to show the contrast, the Music starts in Western Style, goes to Carnatic , touches Western again finally culminating in a small hymn.

The Music just before this hymn is mind boggling.When he says 'we need the Holy Fire and Mantras ', we feel the Fire by way of Music!

Master is always the Master!!

2.Stealing

Stealing in Temple 1-His innocence and his ability to break open any lock are exploited.His uncle and his accomplice take him to the temple.The commotion and the melee that follow are depicted wonderfully .The use of modern instruments as early as 1992 is simply amazing!

Stealing in Temple 2- He sees Abhirami and the Paavani piece is played slowly followed by the ‘stealing’ music.

3.Abduction

i.Kidnapping- While it would be tempting for a Music Director to sound noisy in such a sequence, the Maestro uses just one Guitar which speaks volumes.

ii.Night In The Caves- He keeps her in safe custody.A melodious Sudhha Dhanyasi becomes a Western Scale to show the ‘Night Effect’.The sequence ends with her trying to escape and the Music changes to the fast beats.

iii.Trying To Escape-She takes the car and drives.The Music also moves like a speeding car .The car is about to fall from the hill and in desperation she cries out for him uttering his name for the first time.He is thrilled to hear his name and it is 'Paavani' all the way!

4.Bath in The Stream-One of the best pieces.Sudhha Dhanyasi in Western Classical style.

The Heroine wants to have a bath and he takes her to the Stream.The Violin orchestra takes over the Guitar when she sees the Stream.
After he leaves her, she gives furtive glances …the percussion followed by the strings..
She puts her feet into the Water the Western Flute sings with joy.

It is Bath in the Musical Stream!

5.Mother Is Alive-This sequence takes place in the beginning. He is under the custody of a Doctor and to take him away and ‘use’ him for criminal activities, his Uncle lies to the Doctor that his mother is dead.On reaching home, he finds her to be alive.A very short piece in Sitar in the Hindustani Raag Purya Dhanashree followed by the violin which cries!

As per Hindu philosophy, there are 3 Gunas-Satva Guna , Rajo Guna and Tamo Guna.

AGNI NATCHATHIRAM - FAMILY ISSUES

I just can't seem to get enough of this movie. Just like Aboorva Sagothirargal , almost all scenes in this movie have such powerful BGM scores. Different BGM Themes have been used in the movie like the AshokVsGautham fight theme , Karthik - Nirosha love track and this family issues theme.

Apart from these scores, there are other scenes where the BGM complements the visuals so well, like the flash fight , the romance scenes between prabhu and amala and the comedy track between Janakraj and his wife. There is also a nice confusion score when DiscoShanti and VKR's wife come back at the same time, giving both VKR and Janakaraj a tough time.

The family issues is a nice score. The main characters in the movie are divided into Vijaykumar, Prabhu's family and Karthik's family. The BGM is used when any one of these groups tends
to hurt the other either through actions or words. Definitely, one of IR's master pieces. Good to start of the first post of the new year , with this cracker.

(Later in the movie, Vijayakumar claims that he has never hidden the fact that he was married twice or he saw any difference between both his sons. This scene proves that it is all hogwash. karthik is severely abused in the movie, mainly because he is the second wife's son.)

VARUSHAM16 - THE LECHEROUS OLD MAN

This is a very insignificant track in the movie. The old man (V.K.Ramaswamy) has a crush on the servant of the house and this is exploited by Janakaraj and his grandson. This is a seperate theme for him and this theme is used whenever he tries to follow her without the knowledge of his wife.

This is the only substantial significant footage of V.K.Ramaswamy leaching at the servant in the whole movie and as such, the BGM impact is much more here. A typical 80s kind of comedy. A similar concept is used in the movie Agni Natchathiram. There again, its the same pair - VKR and Janakaraj. The DiscoShanti theme used in Agni Natchathiram is quite famous and can be found in the older posts of the blog.

SETHU - RAGGING (LOVE THEME)

Sethu(Chiyan) is a rowdy in the college. He finds an innocent little fresher and decides to rag her.

In the first part of the clip, sethu decides to use his authority to dominate her, like any normal senior would. Here, Raja introduces us to the love theme that would be used through out the love scenes involved with Sethu and Abithu.

In the second part of the clip, he becomes less dominant over her, as he finds out how innocent she is. Bala tries to tell us that there could be a gentle heart even in a rustic rowdy character like sethu. Raja tries to reflect that feeling through his music.

In the third part of the clip, he has begun to like her now. He wants to find out more about her. This curiosity is reflected in the BGM at 2:05. Her action of offering him water to wash his hands rather than unculturedly wipe it away with a sheet of notebook paper tends to impress him a lot. He then enquires about her name and its meaning. Some sarcastic ajak talk from his friend ends the clip.

EN UYIR THOZHAN - BETRAYED

A village girl impressed by a drama troupe artist decides to elope with him. She gets up early in the morning in the train to find that, she has been duped of her jewels and that he has left her in the lurch.

The clip can be analyzed in two parts. First - the girl gets up and is shocked to see that her lover is missing. Feelings of anxiety tend to dominate the girl when she strives hard to look for her lover. But there is hope in the girl's mind that he may be around some where.

The second part of the clip is , when she comes to know the truth, that she has been betrayed. So, the feelings of anxiety have been replaced totally by sorrow and so there is also a change in the BGM pattern towards the end of the clip, as represented by the single flute.

HEY RAM - RAM IN LOVE ( PRELUDE TO NEE PARTHA PAARVAI)

I have no words to explain this. Divine bliss.. Sheer ecstasy for the ears are not words that can equalize the goose bumps that i get each time when i listen to this piece. The prelude music for the "Nee partha parvai" song in the soundtrack. It has been edited and placed as a BGM in the first half of the movie, during a love making session with Kamal and his first wife - Aparna. Rani Mukherjee's bengali lyrics , the piano keys and the violins together churn out some amrutham for our ears. Believe me .. listen to this..

SINGARAVELAN - LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT

The power of the BGM is that it has to reflect the relative mood of the scene , rather than the real one. Singaravelan was a full length comedy film , made by R.V.Udhayakumar , who had a very good success rate in the 90s. Here, Kamal and his friends are looking out for his athai ponnu, who he has not seen for many years. He first sees her and follows her into the sea and eventually saves her from drowning. Now, normally, the hero saving the heroiene from the scene should have been a lot more serious. Well, here, this is just a jolly scene. Everyone in the theatre know that nothing is going to happen to her, and the BGM just reflects that, in a very stylish manner.

The movie was produced by Ilayaraja himself, under his Pavalar productions banner. The script was penned by Panchu Arunachalam, who had done so for many 80s Kamal's films(they were mainly directed by G.N.Rangarajan).

PICKPOCKET - THE HONEST POLICEMAN(POLICE THEME)

After becoming a policeman, he becomes quite famous, because of his honesty and hardwork. Silksmitha also has a nice role as a honest policewoman. This is one of the scenes that shows how honest he is, irrespective of his dark past.

This theme is used to represent the honest police officer. This theme is used at specific scenes involving the police Sathyaraj , like the scene, where he eventually has finished his training and also when a heartbroken Sathyaraj encouraged by Silksmitha's words, decides to come back to work, after he indulges himself in drink, because of a broken heart.
