Pondaati Thevai is a nice emotional love story that ends on a high point, that there is more to a married life than what goes on in the bed. The girl is ready to undergo the risky operation for her to become a normal housewife, while he is not willing to take the chance of losing her.
The scene starts off with Sindhu telling a hospitalized Parthiban the truth. This is where the BGM starts. Now, there are two central characters and in different situations. One is the hapless heroiene who hopes for the best in a silent hospital, while the other is a energetic Parthiban , out to save his girl.
There is some desperation in Parthiban and he screams and starts running towards her. At this point, the heroiene is preparing for the operation. Observe the difference in the BGM as the video shuttles between both characters. There is a periodic violin sequence parallelized by the kottu melam in fast motion, as Sindhu tries to stop Parthiban. On the other hand, the music shown at the heroiene projects a much more peaceful ambience.
At the traffic signal as Parthiban stops to catch his breath, even Raja stops his BGM for a few seconds and starts again when the signal turns green. The BGM is in perfect sync with the visuals on screen. This is really amazing stuff. This calls for highly precise work and Raja seems to excel in it.
The BGM starts again and it has to keep with Parthiban's mood and its even more important, because the thaali is going along with the van and he is even more desperate not to lose it.
Now, at this point the heroiene is being rushed to the operation theatre. We can hear just simple gongs giving us the feeling that something untoward could happen? Some sound like a death knell.
At this point Parthiban has entered the hospital too. As the camera is focussed on him continuously till he enters the operation theater, Raja prefers to go with the mood of Parthiban.. until he meets her with a loud scream...
Both of them have met.. now this is a BGM in unison.. flocking birds.. rising sea waves.. some voice humming.. when Parthiban tries to justify with the doctors.. and finally the "Aariro..Paatu Paada".. instrumental, when he ties the thaali. At this point, the BGM gives you goosebumps.. This instrumental is played with different instruments with the nadaswaram, the tabla and the flute.
The point where he tied the Thaali is a visual high point, so the song is played with a lot more fanfare.. It is more of a visual impact than a audio impact.. As they speak, he tries to tell her that they can merely live out their lives with each other.. Here again, Raja plays the same tune with the sole flute....
Finally , Parthiban speaks teh final dialogue in front of the camera.. and Raja plays it out behind the scenes with the chorus, the tabla and the flute.... Scintillating Stuff from Raja...
Trivia:
